What subjects do you tutor?
As a credentialed teacher, I am well-versed in every subject area in the Kindergarten through Sixth grade spectrum—from language arts and reading to math and science, I can assist your student in the area where he or she needs help.
What ages do you tutor?
I specialize in Kindergarten through Sixth grade.
Where does tutoring occur?
Typically, the student’s family chooses to have the tutoring sessions take place in-home. Other students arrange to stay after school and are tutored there, and still others choose the local library for its quiet atmosphere. I am available to work in most of the greater Orange County area for in-person tutoring; please contact me to inquire if your location is within my range. If you are out of my travel range, we can arrange for online tutoring through Skype!
Does a parent need to be home while the student is being tutored?
While you do not need to be in the same room (which can be good as it eliminates distractions), the student’s parent or guardian must be home during all tutoring sessions. This is for the safety of all parties involved. If the student is to be tutored at school, we can arrange for a school-sanctioned adult to be present. This will be discussed in detail at the initial meeting.
How many students work with a tutor at a time?
Your child is guaranteed a one-on-one session which allows for the student to have my undivided attention at each session.
How many times a week does my child get tutored?
Many of my students are tutored for one, two, or three hours a week. Typically one or two hour-long sessions per week are scheduled. At your initial meeting, these options will be discussed. As there are no contracts to sign regarding number of sessions or length of sessions, it is your ultimate decision how many hours per week tutoring occurs.
What if my child needs help at other times during the week?
One thing that separates me from other tutoring services is that I offer not only on-site tutoring, but also some amazing online options help your child during other times than his/her regularly scheduled tutoring sessions. Your child can receive help via email on weekdays between 2 and 9 p.m. for free with a six-hour turnaround period. Your child can also sign up for online tutoring via my Skype service. Online tutoring allows me to tutor students across the country without having to leave Orange County.
What if my child just needs help with a specific assignment or activity?
If your child only needs help on a special assignment, I offer hourly rates which would apply to a one-time session. I would also be able to provide remote assistance through my Skype service.
Do you provide the supplies / materials?
This depends on the student’s need as discussed with the student’s parents. I am trained in many of Orange County’s district-mandated curriculum and would be happy to use the student’s textbooks and materials to instruct. There are also times I plan for the session and bring supplemental activities and/or materials that apply to the tutored subject matter.
How do we schedule sessions?
Once again, being a private tutoring service I am able to have some degree of flexibility. My goal is to work with the student and his/her family to find a time that is convenient for all.
How is The Learning Garden different from other local tutoring companies?
There are many reasons I am different from franchised tutoring companies. There is of course the element of travel. I come to you! I hold a multiple-subject credential which qualifies me to work in classrooms or with students ranging from Kindergarten to Sixth on a full-time basis, and Kindergarten through Twelfth grade on a substitute basis.
Many other local companies are now offering one-on-one, in-home tutoring. However, The Learning Garden offers something the others don’t: online tutoring options. As a student through The Learning Garden, your child has the option of getting help via email on weekdays from 2 to 9 p.m. Within a few hours, your child will receive an email response offering assistance, whether it is a general education question or a question about a specific problem on a homework assignment. I also offer online tutoring via Skype, a program free to the student through a simple download. With this method, the tutor and student work live using their webcams from the comforts of their own homes. No other local tutoring company offers these modern options.
Do you work with children with special needs?
I have some experience working with children with special needs. I am familiar with the importance of an IEP and details concerning IEPs. It is my goal to work closely with your child’s IEP and, with your permission, your child’s teacher.
How long will my child stay in tutoring?
Depending on the need, this can range from a few sessions to the entire school year. There are no long-term commitments required.
How will I know how my child is progressing?
I will gladly summarize each session for you upon your request. With your permission, I will also contact your child’s teacher, and work closely with him or her in determining the child’s strengths, weaknesses, achievements, and progress.
